What’s happening on Mist Mountain ? A Walk-Around in April, a very unpredictable month.
Well, as promised, we have the chickens and the eggs on the same page and I leave you to decide which came first.
We do not leave the light on for the chickens which means for a couple months there are no eggs. This means we have eggs till about late November. December we use up what have been stockpiled, and January into March I actually have to go buy some. We live in a very expensive electricity zone, so buying the eggs is much cheaper than paying to extend daylight for the chickens to lay.
By April we are once again getting plenty. They all are not laying yet, but enough are to start sharing with friends.
We are up to 13 chickens this year. If they all decide to lay we will have to have a fridge just for eggs if I want to have room for milk as well. Just kidding.
The chickens are spoiled rotten but have their noses out of joint since the new puppy in town has knocked them down to second place in our attention lately. They are a hoot to watch. And now, puppy (Tyke) likes watching them too. Maybe too much. She also thinks when the chickens get their little bread tidbits that she should too.
So, for today, the answer to the question is the eggs come first because this is the E page. Ha!

I am fascinated by the egg laying, as my uncle’s ducks started a couple of months ago. I didn’t realize that light was a factor (I really don’t know anything about it for that matter). Happy a-z!
Thanks for visiting, Andrea. Yes, my friend has ducks and they need stop laying when the days get too short in the winter also. An automatic light in the coop will usually trick the chickens into thinking it is still daylight.
